My father who immigrated to Canada from Haiti in 1970 always told me from a young age about the symbolic day of May 9 and how the world should honor the sacrifice the Red Army and the Russian people made during WW2. Although I have no family who were directly affected by this war, I have made sure to start speaking to my 9 year old son about this just like my father did to me back in the 70's.
