I thought D dorian is the same scale as C major so playing it over a C major progression surely will sound like just C major?

I find it hard to grasp the concept of a progression in a mode that isn't major or minor. For greek modes don't you usually linger in just one chord for a long time instead of progressing seen as the progression kills the vibe of a mode?
