When The Client Won't Pay!

Sometimes in the world of construction, a contractor is unable to get paid by the client. Each person handles this differently. You've got a crew to pay, and you've got materials to cover. What would you do if the customer wouldn't pay you for the work that you've put in?

We hope that you enjoy our videos here at Construction Fun. Have a great day and be safe out there!

I agree with all these workmen. If you can’t afford it don’t get work done

I was a licensed contractor & I love shit like this. Here some things to beware That person who is always really busy because they're so important & really can't take the time to pay your bill. People who have been good payers, then at the end of the job they suddenly need a whole bunch more stuff done & you forget to get a deposit but not to they pay their bills. Except this time they don't! I've got 2 friends who lost their businesses to this scenario. Remember, you're trading your time for their money, which must always be paid on a timely basis... no exceptions.

Once you install or remodel it is the owners properly, that why myself as a contractor get installment payments as the job progresses, write the contract to leave a small balance at completion, this gives us better leverage.35 years in business

Bottom line. Pay the man if he has done the work. The tradesmen have done the work, they have families to feed, do the decent thing and pay the man what he is owed.

Progress payment is the best way to go and leave a small amount at the end

We men break our bodies to do this kind of work. It costs us more than money.

No more pay, no more work. It's that simple.

I was a contractor for over 30 years. This only happened once. Police were called. I explained that I purchased all the materials I was "removing" and she refused to pay. They told her that I had the right. 😅

In the UK if someone doesn’t pay, they sign the debt off to a debt collection company and they then apply to the court who give fixed dates to pay the outstanding bill (plus expenses of the debt collection company). If the customer then fails to pay, the bailiffs have power of entry to list values of goods and to seize and sell them.

I had a guy who had money and and I had finished what I was hired to do and he started being real picky. He had a few people on the job doing different stuff and I asked for my money. He started hollering and cussing. I let him get it all out and I simply said, "if you dont have any money just say so." People with money consider that an insult. He jerked a wad of cash out of his pocket so fast. I said good, now pay me.

I don't blame any of these guys for enacting revenge. I'd be furious too.

We had a contractor, he built a new house and the homeowner screwed him on closing. He showed up at night, went in the basement and cut the entire house off the foundation! Talk about one big F U.

I worked on a couples yachting home a few years ago. Not their Lake Como home, or their Lake Tanginyka home but their South Coast home they went to when London got to hot. They asked me to sort out a small part of the garden and when I quoted they said the quote was so good could I do the whole garden, no need to quote. I was young and naive so I remodelled the whole garden and they paid me the amount I'd quoted for the small area. I learned really fast there, quote everything, get a deposit.

They must have done that to someone else too, because a bit later someone pumped Gripfill into all the exterior locks on the property, and they had to have the doors cut in half to get in. Probably crossed the wrong

I love this. I know there are bad contractors but, these people take pride in their work. Their time isn’t free. Licensed or not, I’ve seen unlicensed contractors make licensed contractors look like amateurs. And, NO, it isn’t ‘criminal damage’, it’s a civil matter. If that guy, in your bathroom with a sledgehammer, was paid, he wouldn’t need to destroy HIS property. It’s only the homeowner’s when the final payment is made. Hope you have good homeowners insurance, a lot of insurance companies won’t cover the damage if you signed a contract and failed to honor it. It doesn’t work that way.

A buddy was a drain layer on a major commercial project. The developer stopped payments, so the drain layer backed a concrete truck up to the site and filled all the drains up with cement.
