I’ve been on the end of a 6-1 where we were 0-1 up at HT and I’d scored the goal, they were the top team in the division but all it takes is one or two players to lose their heads when the first goal goes in and it’s a snowball effect. It’s absolutely soul destroying when you’re totally up for it and you watch pretty much everyone around you give up one by one, it affects you for a lot more than that game because you lose belief in your teammates knowing they’re quitters so it makes it much tougher to give everything for them going forward.

I was the keeper on the bad end of a 11-5 result. We’d played 3 games in 6 days before this happened and won them handily but the wheels just fell off in the second half as fatigue set in. I remember screaming with frustration at my exhausted defenders who were backing up into the box instead of closing people down. The opposition teeing each other up inside the 18 over and over. Getting a hand on every shot, but rebounds falling perfectly to attackers for tap-ins. My captain, our CF, pulling me aside near full time and telling me to look at it as practice, not to take it personally. That’s the trick; to not let a bad game defeat you permanently. Competing your heart out but catching every bad bounce just happens sometimes. Man U will be better.
