Great explanation. Another way to think of that sharp G would be to think of the A harmonic minor scale.

This is a great lesson, but to save people some trouble you should start by saying that E Phrygian is not the scale, it is a C major scale, Phrygian is the mode. Also it's the same scale as A natural minor or D Dorian, these scales played over E become E Phrygian, and those sharps are a way of borrowing from the harmonic minor scale without knowing the harmonic minor scale
