As COVID-19 cases surge around the world once again, Taiwan remains the Asian country that has most successfully tackled the pandemic from the beginning, despite its proximity to China. So how what has Taiwan done that other countries haven't?

This Professor of Singapore has no idea what himself is talking about. Taiwan didn't lock down its country.

The community of Taiwan is more able to consider the whole rather than the individual without giving up individual freedoms.

This is an example of responsible governance. They pinpoint the problem with effective measures. Rather than loud and useless political talks that doesn't do anyone any good. Western civilization has allowed politicians to mess things up for so long.

The professor in Singapore seems to be confused. Taiwan doesn't have lockdown. Instead it quarantines and detects the infected incoming travelers. Most of Taiwan's economy functions very much like before. The touridt business and restaurants are affected. But they are still much better than the rest of the world.

So far the country that performs lockdown most seriously (to the degree of horror) is China. The government goes to houses or buildings and nail the doors. Many Chinese die not from covid-19, but from unable to access medical help for other diseases because they simply can't get out of their doors.

The reason of Taiwan's coronavirus success is the people. They are smart, fact-based, and disciplined. They are willing to follow the scientifically proven ways to control the virus.

I credit the success of our response here in Australia and NZ to paying attention to Taiwanese advice. They are our advance warning station of what the Chinese are up to.

I live in Taiwan. Taiwanese still remember the danger of the first SARS back in 2003/2004. When the news broke out that there was a new strain of Sars II, not only the government reacted very fast but also most people. They stocked up themselves with facial masks and disinfection 75% alcohol. In late January, there were no masks nor cleansing alcohol to be found. They were all sold out. As the matter of fact, Taiwanese already got masks before the government announced wearing facial masks was mandatory.
They obeyed the government easily, simply because they know the danger and had experienced it once.

It's not about dictatorship vs democracy or communism vs capitalism. It's about having a government and people that listen to the science and act for the long term benefit. It is obvious that if you lock down the entire country strictly for a few weeks, you can get the virus under total control and that's going to be better for everybody in long term, but unfortunately American and most European politician bow to the pressure to open stuff up as soon as the spread is trending down...
Mainland China, Taiwan, South Korea, New Zealand, Vietnam, and to a lesser degree Japan and Australia also got the virus under total control. This is not about the system, it's about the determination and separating of politics from science

The “expert” from Singapore may need to study up on what Taiwan actually did.

An island country with 23 million people, but still impressive.
One thing that can be learned from Taiwan is to take it 'seriously'.

Taiwan has been doing such a great job of containing the coronavirus outbreak. Hasn’t had any local cases for more than 200 days. Impressive.
