I thought addition came before subtraction. Also, how do you know where to put parentheses when there are none in the equation already?

I did a test in which i followed the BEDMAS procedure to calculate an equation inside the brackets, however my teacher said i was wrong and told me that an equation within a bracket will always go from left to is my teacher an idiot????
