Over here in Scotland we do a version of your Swiss steak.
We call it a Vienna steak and it’s basically the same as yours except the meat it shaped like a cutlet and cooked in a thick lentil, onion and tomato sauce. 🤗💕🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I’m obsessed with the 1950s and I might ask my mom to cook something from one of the recipes

Looks great! How sad the pie came out so sweet you all couldn't eat it. Awww... :( LOVED the bats cut outs! What a very cute idea!! Those potatoes DO look good! I love crushed corn flakes on top of my homemade mac & cheese just before I bake it. That's how we had it as I grew up. :)

Wowsers! There has to be a mistake in that pie recipe. I find most vintage recipes are usually LESS sweet then today's recipes so this seems weird. BUT.... I just ran and grabbed my 1953 copy of The Joy of Cooking to see what they suggest for a blueberry pie. Their recipe is 4 cups of fresh berries with 2/3 to 1 cup or more sugar depending on the acidity of the berries (my 1943 copy has the same ratio). My 1950 Fanny Farmer cookbook uses 2 1/2 cups blueberries and 1/2 cup sugar. Looking at other fruit pies they used a lot less sugar than they do with blueberries. Interesting. Sorry, I am such a food nerd this gave me a little something to research ;)

I picked up that same cookbook for $3 at my local goodwill. I have yet to try a recipe, I think my first will be the polish sausage stew in a slow cooker. I think it’s an added on page that you would have to cut out and file in the yourself.

That all looks yummy Noel! I remember growing up in the 60's, they had such interesting ideas for dishes like the melon plate, I think it is a cool concept!
I know you were following your cookbook, but if you ever want an alternative cornbread recipe, try the one for Kenny Roger's Cornbread Muffins. My son could eat the entire batch by himself!!

I like those potatoes, think I'll give them a try (Will sub in canola oil to follow our eating lifestyle), another tip, you can use crushed Corn Flakes as coating for fish. I use it all the time for the walleye my hubby & son catch! 🐟
