Eating Weird Food from the 50s (with Katherine)

Katherine got a sort of recipe book that her grandmother put together in the 1940s and 50s. It was fascinating enough that I decided we should cook some of this REALLY WEIRD STUFF!

So much Jello you guys. *shudder*

I kinda want you to continue this, it was interesting to see some of the dishes that our ancestors might have eaten.

I think I laughed too hard at the recipe describing the two eggs to be "staring at you with their big yellow eyes"

I can't stop laughing at the jello.

Why the fuck would you ever mix cranberries, orange, and celery?!

We were served a dish at my parent's house - brought by another guest - which was blackberry Jello, chopped walnuts and green OLIVES (WTF!?). I'm telling you, when you expect a green grape and get a green olive in your Jello, it's not a pleasant experience. I asked my dad what he thought of the dish. He said "Oh it's her specialty, she brings it to lots of dinner parties and everyone always asks for the recipe." I said, "Sure they do, they need it to show to the doctors in the ER!"

The watery texture of the jello was probably from the oranges - a "food chopper" from the '50s would not have been nearly as aggressive as a modern food processor. You turned the oranges into juice; dicing would have been more what was intended.

Hi! Here from 2021. This has pandemic energy written all over it. I think another visit to the old recipe book could be so much fun for the current time!

I just love old and heavily used things like that log book. They're just beautiful to look at.

Every once in a while, I come back to this video. Hank's readings of the recipes, the actual food, their reactions eating the dishes--It makes me laugh every time.

it was easier being skinny when food tasted nothing.

Um, guys...American popovers are British Yorkshire Puddings. Try serving alongside roasted beast with a bit of gravy; yum!

I honestly adored this video. I feel like it was a great way to incorporate what so many YouTube accounts do just to get views (like eating weird food) with what the vlogbrothers do, which I feel is teaching you about something. No, I didn't necessarily learn about current world suck in this video, but I never would have connected the idea of "butter, when possible" to the rations during WWII, and I certainly wouldn't have guessed that these were common at a time that doesn't necessarily seem that long ago. Thank you for a highly entertaining but still education video, Katherine and Hank.

In all fairness, a LOT of the food products have changed since the 50's. They now skimp, add too much salt, etc., etc.

I was laughing... but Helen Hunt sent me over the edge. This is the best vlogbrother video of 2016.

Ya know what's even worse? Tomato Jello. With tiny shrimp. Everything you never wanted.
