In sort of relation to the mention of the Christian meta post about forgiveness. There's a quote that I saw "Forgiveness is divine, but we are earthly beings" that I feel perfectly expresses my personal opinion on Redemption. Yes, as a Christian it is extremely important to forgive others. It's in one of the most well-known prayers "forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us". Forgiveness is divine, but we are not God. We are not capable of forgiving everyone who wrongs us. It doesn't make us bad people, or in any way lesser than those who can. It simply makes us human. Jon being unable to forgive Daisy is so tragic and humanizing on both their ends.

I could hug you. When I saw you made a TNA analysis about Daisy??!!! And forgiveness?!! Gosh I was so happy. Your TMA analysis videos are superb. And you always talk about really nuanced points.

Daisy is complicated, and I agree that Jon shouldn’t have forgiven her. You phrasing about still caring about people you can’t forgive? Not having to forgive them? Really good and gave me words to express that theme. This was good commentary on one of so many nuanced themes in TMA, you did a great job and I appreciate that’s.
I’m rambling. Point is: good video, yes it makes sense.

THIS. i swear to god, TMA is the only series I've seen where redemption/healing is not directly connected to forgiveness. so many redemption arcs in media entire hinge on the victims forgiving the perpetuator. and it's not always so cut and dry.

i would call this redemption, by the way, because Daisy did become a slightly better person by refusing to kill anymore (at least before she completely gave into the fear to save Basira). definitely far from a "good" person, but she did try. redemption arcs should never be about forgiveness. sometimes you just have to acknowledge that the damage you did was too much and people might not forgive you or even make peace with you. redemption is about changing for the better, not to be forgiven or accepted but because it is the right thing to do.

and they did that so well with Daisy. in the end, Daisy was never a good person, but she tried to be. and the show managed to make her likeable and sympathetic, while also reminding us that this doesn't justify everything that she did. she has to carry the burden of all that she did, she cannot undo any of it. everyone can be redeemed, but not everyone can be forgiven.

“You can still care about and want someone in your life without forgiving that person” is a FACT that more people need to understand. Thank you for stating it. The whole video was lovely as well, great job.

I loved these episodes wrapping up Daisy’s arc and was so excited to see that you made a video on them!
I agree with your thoughts wholeheartedly and I sure hope that other writers can take a page out of Tma’s book when it comes to writing about forgiveness in the future.

Forgiveness has always been a way more complex subject for me than it usually is when other people talk about it and my view on forgiveness is ever expanding it seems. With the context of “forgiveness is divine” I would call that “absolute forgiveness” which can only be divine. Human forgiveness, as I have come to understand it, is simply freeing oneself from the wrongs committed against them. The forgiveness doesn’t even have to be actively acknowledged, it just something that occurs with healing. The misconception is that giving forgiveness must be sought out in order to heal or that it absolves the wrongdoer in some way. Because forgiveness is not redemption. You can forgive someone and still hold their actions against them. It’s just that those actions no longer hold power over you. As I understand it, human forgiveness is a side effect of healing, not a requirement. It’s a subtle thing. Some wounds never fully heal and thus forgiveness is never fully given and that’s ok. As long as you are happy and well, forgiveness doesn’t need to be fully given.

The message that it’s ok not to forgive is a good one indeed but I’ve never seen anyone acknowledge that forgiving doesn’t mean everything is ok. Because it doesn’t. Human forgiveness isn’t divine. It’s never absolute and sometimes incomplete because humans can’t be perfect and that’s ok.

I bring this up because it’s possible for a wrongdoer to feel guilt for their unforgivable actions. Whether or not the action is actually unforgivable or not is irrelevant. Forgiving oneself is always harder than forgiving someone else and knowing or believing you’ve committed an unforgivable act, owning up to it and feeling true guilt over it is a great way to justify engaging in psychological self harm.

I’ve gone way off topic and everything I’ve mentioned here is entirely beside the point I just don’t have anywhere else to put it. I feel alone in thinking this way but I think some part of me needs to believe that there is no such thing as unforgivable.

tIt always saddens me that when we talk about forgiveness, we've almost entirely forgotten what the original Christian forgiveness was about. Christian forgiveness, as it was originally taught, is internal to *you*. To "forgive someone" in the old sense is to let go of *your* anger, to move on with *your* life, to not let the other person live in *your* head and poison *your* thoughts. However, you do NOT owe *them* anything. In the original Christian version of forgiveness, all you have to do is to not wish death and harm on the person who wronged you. That's It. you don't have to talk to them, you don't have to tell them you forgive them, you don't ever have to akgnowledge their existence again if you don't want to. The Christian forgiveness seeks to give you peace of mind, it does not exist to give the other person closure.
And in that sense, you do need to forgive everyone who wronged you because it's much healthier for you mentally.
