You killed this topic better than anyone I've ever seen talk about the subject. I'm elated your gave that paper example it was absolutely perfect... I was podcasting back in 2005 and I tried explaining codecs back then just as you did and I didn't do it the same justice that you just provided. I absolutely love your explanation, I will definitely use this to explain to folks in future. Also your story about the Paintball company was magnificent. Anyway you won me over I'm gonna subscribe and check out your info superb job.

Love this Josh. Consider talking about IPB and ALL-I codecs sometime in the future 👍

Thanks for the very clear explanation. Working with Premiere Pro from a Fujifilm X-T3, I need everything in ProRes or Premiere basically collapses into a heap on the floor and gives up. My solution is to record to an Atomos Ninja V. Loving the flog files it produces, and they're waaay easier to work with in Premiere.

FYI, YouTube accepts ProRes. Fun fact, every single time it's time to upload to YouTube, I say "lemme upload a prores 422", get impatient with the upload time, then get an H264 and throw it onto YouTube.

In theory, uploading a prores to YouTube will be better (one less compression round) but I've never actually have been patient enough to upload a prores.

I used to upload ProRes 4444 to YouTube. Looked great

This was helpful. Didn't realize the compression would be compounded by repeat deliveries in H.264.

As others have said, you've explained this so well I think anyone could understand.

This is great! Never learned this in college and always thought that exporting to H.264 was the highest quality you can export. You got a new subscriber!

I so much like the crumpling paper analogy.
The more compress the file (more your crumple the paper) the less data it retain.
