Composite Testing: Carbon Fiber Sheet Cantilever Bend Test

We finally are at the point of testing the properties of some of the carbon fiber samples that have been made over the last year. In this test we determine how a sheet of aluminum compares to sheets of carbon fiber by bending the sheets with a weight while clamped at one end.

Hey, thanks again, UAW! This video is really really helpful to me. I'm still in the process of designing my own UL and intend to rely quite heavily on computational analysis to determine my own CF layup. It's taken me a couple months to get there, but as of this morning, I seem to have finally gotten there. I used the information in this video and others and modeled up a couple of your samples in ANSYS mechanical with ACP (the composite add on). On this test, I was able to replicate your setup and results. The simulated results shown on my composite model were within a percent of the values you achieved on deflection! As well as being within a few percent on both weight and overall thickness. My aluminum model matched yours very closely as well.
This has greatly improved my confidence in my ability to accurately account for the stresses that will take place on my own CF monococque, which feels awesome.

Wanted to say I'm finding this series on techniques for getting good surface finishes, saturation and testing to be useful and interesting. I'm going to be making a carbon fiber electric skateboard and maybe also a electric bike.
