The needlessly obtuse CBC graphic that obfuscates their funding sources

There is a bar chart on the CBC website detailing where they get their funding. Look for the magenta to see how much of their funding comes from the government and it doesn’t seem all that high. In fact, most of their funding seems to come from other sources. But take a closer look at the Y axis and you’ll notice something.

The only reason they'd do this is to intentionally mislead. Shameful.

One more reason to distrust CBC. Not shocked.

Most important of all, this is exactly how they behave in almost all their news articles. Low-down dishonest sneaks.

When you ask someone for clear line by line numbers and they give you a confusing chart, that is a person trying to sell you something rather than tell you the facts.

Soooo, can we call this… “misinformation” also?

And that's why I get my news from independent sources.

Love this. Canadians need to see a whole lot more of this kind of information

When I was a child - in 70s there was a need for a funded cbc. But that hasn’t been true in 30 + years. Time to grow-up CBC .

I'm still undecided on your news posts, National Post. But for the time being... keep up the good work. And props to your graphics guy.

I can feel my concerns assuaged and my perception of bias at CBC corrected by a misleading bar graph? Who knew?

That is why I refuse to pay for TV. I didn’t want to pay more for CBC channels. CBC should be defunded.

Pretty schisty CBC, maybe you need a funding cut

Now deduct how much of their advertising revenue come from government departments and you'll get the real picture

One of 2 things should happen:

1. Significantly lower government funding to CBC

2. Reform the CBC into a state-run utility news channel primarily with stuff you might need to know like weather, emergencies, and stuff relevant to elections and Canadian politics (if opinion is present, it should be from all major parties in the discussion).

I personally like the second option better as we get some utility out of it. Also either way, over a billion dollars a year should not be going to a news channel.

If they lose all their government funding then they won’t have to do these kind of misleading graphs and the people at the top will be able to sleep better with a clear conscience. They will also have to work harder to stay in business and that will improve their sleep as well. I think defunding the CBC is a win win for taxpayers and the people working there.

Haven’t paid mind to cbc in years - and I’m never going back. I get enough government propaganda online - I don’t need to see more.

Wonderful. A microcosm of how the media operates

Intentionally misleading, no doubt about it. Otherwise they would have used a pie chart
