You could also select the"front faces only" option at the bottom of the brush menu

This issue stops so many people from sculpting

Thank you a lot, Grant - this isn't a lifesaver but definitely a grrat tip to get a whole lot less into trying to work around this issue over and over again! 🙂👍

Thank you! I just did a thin project and struggled so hard. I did use Front Faces Only but it wasn't enough.

Cool. I had exactly this issue the other day. Thx for sharing.

To save any of your changes to Blender as default instead of just the user preferences in the preferences menu do this.

Create a new project, make your changes to the Sculpt tools, etc.. then file save as "startup.blend" and save it to this location:

On Mac: Support/Blender/config

On PC:

On Linux: ~/.config/blender/config

From now on those settings will be default. You can even make it come with the default cube pre-deleted or even have it load the ever so rare default UV Sphere when making a new project.

Maybe it isn’t default because it’s adding material on a deform brush. Technically the way it is now is physically correct, your pulling on one end and the other goes with it. Of course maybe this setting is just easier to work with, and realism doesn’t always mean good, ESPECIALLY in a software like blender.

I don't think it should be the default because in many cases there may be surfaces with little details slightly hidden that I don't want to get stuck in place.

its not default because you dont want it on all the time because it can result in the faces of both sides clipping into each other and can be a pain in the ass to fix down the line. this same thing is in zbrush and I only enable it when I need it then I instantly turn it off

Sometimes when im workin with planes i gotta solidify before i start sculpting cuz if not wild stuff happens
And in cases like that bottom part should actually move together with top one so dunno, maybe thats why it is like that??

Theres a toggle at the bottom called front faces only, as far as I remember itll work much better than view normal masking

Oh damn. I've been using front faces only but that messes the mesh up you're sculpting over something that already has some detail.

I feel like this shouldn't be the default. The tool is doing exactly what you expect it to do, there is no reason why it should default to the unexpected behavior of ignoring stuff that is facing the other way, I feel like that's just counterintuitive

Do you discover this on your own? How the hell you're amazing

Check front faces only, or mask back part, OR USE ZBRUSH
