colesevelam hydrochloride

A bile acid sequestrant, high-capacity bile acid-binding molecule. It is a non-absorbed, polymeric lipid-lowering and glucose-lowering agent used to lower LDL cholesterol in the blood.
It is taken by mouth.

It is used along with diet and exercise to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood alone or in combination with HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins).

• familial (primary) hyperlipidemia
• type 2 diabetes mellitus

(Contraindications)
• type 1 diabetes (insulin-dependent diabetes)
• diabetic ketoacidosis
