A friend of mine was curious to see how I would custom paint a GUNDAM model so he bought this one for me. I figured I would make a model about it just for the heck of it!

Nice coat of surface primer, now when are you gonna finish it?

Gunpla is usually designed to be simple and intuitive so everyone can enjoy building them even though they're not model kit veterans. But the true beauty of the hobby comes in customization. You can buy metal parts for your kit. You can make your own custom parts. You can kitbash and create your own details. And gunpla encourages people to do just that.

I was excited for the end result because he said "I don't like the color scheme", but when he literally just painted it all one color is when he lost me

I love how this is a video of a man absolutely fucking up all the major steps of building Gunpla while trying to talk shit about it. The painting, build errors, and fucking up the instructions.

I mean, I'm not going to try and act like Gunpla is ever going to be on the level of difficulty on that Yamato model, but I should correct you on a few things. The MG (Master Grade 1/100 Scale) you got is in no way worth 200 bucks. MG's are about 35 to 70. That pricepoint is more in line with PG's (Perfect grade 1/60 Scale) that have just as many runners as your Yamato with the more expensive ones also including LED kits. Yes the RG (Real Grade 1/144 Scale) kits you talked about are smaller scale with more intricate parts, but I should mention they tend to simplify the real hard parts like the inner frame and hands so they aren't as fun to build and customize like a PG is. PG is definitely worth the experience, but overall I like MG's as a good balance.

This man really said he used google translate for one of the most understandable instructions.

"This is so easy [...] I already broke a piece" what?? lol Gunpla is meant to be easy because they go for mass appeal. The kit you built is roughly $50 - so you could buy 6 for the price of your Yamato and make a nice diorama/scene. I agree ships are waaay more time consuming, but I wouldnt say much more difficult besides the glue. I personally like to use glue as little as possible on all kits. I actually painted my RX-78 OYW version because I didnt like the pale colors and got them closer to the bright anime colors.

The Gundam was sent for a coal digging mission and got Charred.

Compares Yamato battleship to just a "master" grade Jay.... just no.... if you were benchmarking gpus you just compared a 1660 to a 2080. Try a perfect grade gundam kit.. more in line.

honestly tho, it's nice to hear from an outsider perspective on gundam kits. the whole snap fit thing is really their selling point. and the fact that there is no need to paint them straight out of the box, for the most part, really draw in beginners and casuals alike. even for the high difficulty kits like the perfect grade line, so long as you follow the manual carefully, you can build them straight out of the box. then its up to you to leave it like that or improve upon what was given to you.

and to quote the anime "Gunpla is freedom."

You’re comparing a $50 mid range Master Grade Gundam kit to a $200 Yamato. A Perfect Grade is a much more fair comparison, Adam Savage had his mind blown by one of those.

There’s also a lot of variety in gundam Mobile suit designs than what it looks like on the surface.

Don’t like the classic white, blue, red, and yellow colors? Get a model of a suit not used by the main character

Prefer something wildly different to the classic gundam look? Some of the antagonist suits are nuts like the Sazabi, Nightingale, and The O

Prefer a more realistic utilitarian mecha and not something that looks like a toy? Get a grunt suit like the Jesta, Jegan, and Geara Doga. Even the aforementioned antagonist suits above fit the bill.

Don’t like the level of detail? Go with an MG Ver Ka. Or Perfect Grade kit. Or scratchbuild and kitbash. GBWC is a great showcase of what’s possible.

Jay, I respect you. But you seem pretty closed minded in this video.
