I too love older cars- but reality set in. See the huge strides in achieved in safety. Most definitely insurance write-offs, but better chance of survival in a late model car.

The driver of the MK2 would almost certainly be dead or have life changing injuries with the head impact

Cars back then were only tested with frontal impact, a lot of cars before the early nineties failed.

The golf 8 is like *are we finished yet?* 🥱

Nice demonstration. The biggest changes happened in the 90's. Cars around 2000 were already good enough, so the passenger cell was almost intact after the frontal crash. So if you want to be safe, you dont nesccessarily need to buy the newest cars. Just skip on everything, that was built in the early 90's or before - except some big premium cars like Mercedes or Volvo.

I own a mk1 and a mk2. I wanted to see a crash test comparison, but I guess it don't matter now... scary!

was it really necessary to kill a Golf 2...

I love how the A-Pillar from the Mk2 even bent in the crumple zone xD

And I would still definitely prefer to own the MK2 Golf before any later generation. I do not buy cars to crash them. I drive my classics carefully with full knowledge that they are not as safe a modern cars, which by the way look crashed even before they leave the showroom floor.

Back in the day the golf 2 actually felt like a sturdy car. I still have that thought actually.
I think a crashtest of an Escort mk3 or a Peugeot 205 (both of which I currently drive) would be even worse than this.

For as much as I loved the Golf II, I am really happy I don't drive it anymore.

At first it didn’t seem that bad until they showed it from the outside on the first one…

I like these videos, only upset is never in these test its hit straight in the middle rather than this 40% or whatever. Would be very different aftermath. Try for once like 40kmh and head to head middle and see results, not that bad....

I would like to see what will remain from Golf 8, if it stops into the wall at a speed of 85 km / h?

So you should have one thing in mind. The crashtest of the Mk2 Golf was done in 2012 and its modelyear was 1983. So it‘s 30 years old as well as all components, so the structure of the car is not the same as 30 years before. You should do a crashtest with a Mk8 when it‘s 30 years old as well. I just want to mention this fact. Although it‘s undoubtly that todays cars are much more safer.

I don't think any cars were SAFE back then until 2000s

Yes, everything was better, except the safety.
