The Church should speak more of the guidelines around mortal sin. This is a critical aspect of our faith and we all can benefit from hearing about it.

I was taught by the seminarians that there are 3 requirements for a sin to be mortal and resultant loss of grace: 1) you must first know that it is a mortal sin 2) of your own free will you decide to do it anyway 3) you then go ahead and do it.. If you didn't know the action or thought was mortal then you have not met all 3 of the requirements.. But later if you learn that it is mortal, you should confess your sin out of ignorance and then never commit it again..
