YouTube's entire budget was spent on subtitles that recognize Winston's great speech

I love how, when you read Churchill’s speeches, they sound so grand and eloquent. *Then* you hear him speak and realise that the man was (most likely) throughly sloshed when he actually made them.

I'm so glad that he lived recent enough that technology could preserve his great quotes eternally.

Considering the inordinate amount of alcohol that he drank on the daily it's amazing he could speak as clearly and coherently as this tbh

EVERY quote:
"At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do."
"That is the resolve of His Majesty's government."
"When Napoleon *lay at* Boulogne for a year with his flat-bottomed boats and his Grand Army" (, he was told by someone, "there are bitter weeds in England.")
(But it certainly seemed that the whole of the French First Army and the whole of the British Expeditionary Force) "north of the Amiens-Abbeville gap" (would be broken up in the open field or else would have to capitulate for lack of food and ammunition.)
(The whole root and core and brain of the British Army, on which and around which we were to build, and are to build, the great British Armies in the later years of the war, seemed about to perish upon the field) "or to be led into an ignominious" (and starving captivity.)

All of these are from his famous "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" speech, so I recommend watching that for further context. And a fun fact for you for reading this: Apparently, Churchill was drunk while giving this speech (which explains his...lax pronunciations), and when an MP called him out on it, he replied, "Madame, that may be true, but in the morning I shall be sober whereas you will still be ugly." What a boss.

This is why i love youtube. A a 16 seconds unskippable ad, before a 25 seconds video. What a great feature.
