Is This The Collapse of the Great American Empire?

What is happening is perhaps a change in the world as we know it.

You may not be old enough to remember it, but in the 1950s, the United States was the undisputed world leader. It wasn’t even close. We had helped liberate many nations in two separate World Wars. Our nation was rich, wholesome and motivated. There was excitement all over the place and national pride was higher than it had been since the end of the American revolution. It didn’t matter if it was big cities or in the exploding suburbs. Most of the country was happy, healthy, in good spirits and relatively well off.

Many of us are depressed, unhealthy, broke, worried, overworked, underpaid and super negative. We are a divided nation now. And our power is waning. Fast.

Since recorded history, this planet has seen superpowers rise, rule and then fall. The Romans, the Greeks, the Assyrians, the Egyptians, the Babylonians, the British. There have been many books written about the fall of once great empires. Each is unique in its demise.

The question is - Are we next? Look around. The signs are all around us. Our people sleep on the streets, our young generation is broke and is refusing to work and start a family. Good jobs are gone and many of our former great cities are crumbling. Our population growth peaked. We’re divided politically. We’re getting fatter and poorer. Our teachers, our nurses and our police officers are overworked and underpaid.

It’s not a bright future. Look around you. There are a lot of signs that indicate our empire is close to coming to an end, if it hasn’t happened already. The decades of US dominance in trade, culture and morality is threatened. You COULD say we’re just an above average nation now.

Every "empire" crumbles. It's inevitable. Especially when you factor the unbelievable greed we have today.

I was born in 1967. My father worked a full time job, and supported the whole family, and our mother was a housewife. We weren’t rich by any means, but we lived in a nice little house. I had an awesome childhood!!

In today’s America, it takes both parents working 12-15 hours a day, just to stay afloat. The middle class neighborhoods in my town, look very run down.. I think because people don’t have the money, or time to properly maintain their property. People don’t dress very nice, and the majority of them look absolutely worn out! America is in the process of throwing all morals out the window. Most children are being raised by single mothers, or come and go live in boyfriends/girlfriends. I personally believe, that we as a country, will soon see the middle class disappear. There will only be the very poor, and the very wealthy. I feel sorry for my 26 year old son, he will never have the life I had..

Brazilian here. I lived in California from 2019 to 2022. It has a wonderful landscape and beautiful mansions and nice cars but the cities' downtowns full of drug addicts and terrible rent prices made me rethink and come back to my country. I feel happier here!

This is the end result of Greed. All the other countries in the world, protect their country's manufacturing base, and other businesses, that produce products that can be sold abroad. Our politicians took money though lobbyist to help facilitate companies moving to cheaper labor countries, to help them make bigger profits. By moving their company's out of the US, and then ship the products back here to be sold. Those jobs that were lost, were all union jobs at one time. That's how now you just see a shell of what our cities used to be.

I was homeless in Portland oregon for 2 months in 2006. I met this older man who was drifting and he claimed he was a teacher. He told me to read about the fall of the Roman empire. He told me that America was going to collapse.

My mother was born in 1954. She died in 2019. Before she passed away she commented on the big changes she has seen take place with this country. She described the world is a waste land. She kind of made me feel like she was happy that she may be passing on soon. I’m still here.

I helped my daughter raise her three kids, and we took them out of school early on, homeschooled all three. They finished in a private highschool, and all three graduated with honors. Proud to say we did the right thing.

I was born in 1951 in Chicago and grew up in the 50s and 60s, amid a time of prosperity and optimistic hope. What I see now is squalor, despair and the formerly great cities as cesspools of crime and human misery. I feel sorry for the young people of today who have to cope with such a dysfunctional society.

My dude, our country has built more for-profit prisons than hospitals in the last decade. Indeed our country is in decline, but mass incarceration is a key factor in that decline.

People always say ''there were plenty of problems in the old days'', ....and I always say, ..''yeah, ..but, ...we still have all of those problems, ....and so many more''.I am recently retired at 60, ..and will finish out my life in relative comfort, ...but, ....I am so glad I don't have children, ...or grandchildren to worry about.The future is looking grim for sure.

In 1972, I worked in a factory for three months. It gave me enough money to pay for one year of private college and a seven year old Volkswagen. My daughter, in 2010, by working in an amusement park (which was the only real work around), could not pay for one semester of school, let alone a used car.

Peruvian here. When I was a kid I used to think the US was paradise on earth, and that It would be cool to contribute to its development. As I grew up, I learned more and more about the dark secrets of the US, and changed my mind.
Americans digged their own grave.

As a merchant mariner first time I landed in the U.S. in 1963, I found it a great country bursting with prosperity. After that, I visited the U.S. many times over the years and found it going down in poverty and despair. Ghettos, ghost towns and slums are cropping up all over, and the crime rate is high. America of 1963 does not exist.

America had it good when they produced the goods and the other countries had to deal with our economy. Now its a global economy and manufacturing goes to the cheapest bidder. We import more than we make. Now we have smarter business's with a need for a smaller workforce. Jobs that pay enough to support a family are disappearing. You have college students with degrees that cost them 200k and less opportunities to pay them back. People get out of school and want to become CEO's overnight. I didn't realize how much of a decline America is in until I lived in New Zealand and then Switzerland. It was a shocker on how much better things were there for common people. Here everything is better only if you're super rich. But in other countries, there are so many small things you never think of that are better for common people. It was an eye opener.
