Basically the same issues that we are facing now. Populism, ignorance, corruption, and nepotism.

The lead poisoning probably also had some small role to play.

The idea of having a 19th century style Industrial Revolution at the time of Romans is far fetched. There’s been periods of “Age of Enlightenment” and “Scientific Revolution” prior to Industrial Revolution that served as pre-requisite for all industrial advancements in 19th and 20th centuries. Without having modern disciplines of engineering, science and maths, as fruits of Scientific Revolution, we could not have enjoyed all products and services offered as a result of Industrial Revolution.

I studied this as a boy in the 60s, and determined that Rome fell decisively in 549 when the Goths systematically decapitated literate society, slaughtering or expelling the patricians and their children. The crippling of trade and destruction of infrastructure aggravated the effects of the plague and famine due to the mass burnings of crops during the war, and whoever was left after the final defeat of the Ostrogoths was in no position to rebuild. IF the Lombards hadn't further contributed to the collapse, perhaps some cities could have rebuilt and sustained their culture, but with the Empire assaulted on all sides Italy was bound to be a wasteland fought over for centuries until the Franks and the Normans conquered from the north and south.

Roman historian here. I'm sorry to say this is a rather unsophisticated hodgepodge of ideas thrown together. The Roman empire lasted for half a millenium (not counting the Byzantines) with dozens of emperors on a wide spectrum of abilities and intentions so you can't really compress a "reason" for the fall. If you want a simplistic one is this: the Roman empire grew as it ate up its surrounding neighbors through conquest but the bigger it grew the more difficult it became to manage. Trajan reached the apex in 117 after which the successive emperors stopped trying to expand because of this difficulty. This was the turning point however as it cut off the low hanging fruit of easy money with which to build and prosper. From this point forward the empire fed on itself through taxation and corruption until there just wasn't anything left by the 5th century. So, in a word, what did them in is that they ran out of money.

Great video! The fall of the Roman Empire was necessary for Europe to develop itself. The only cause you guys did not mention was that, Empires forged by steel need to be sustained by war. For example, the Roman army was both an efficient citizen integration program and a huge revenue machine. Once the RE became too big, and the administrations were not competent enough to expand it, it was destinated to fall.

It didn't collapse so much as eroded. The Eastern Roman lasted longer. One can argue both Administrations exist as their capitals are still capitals.

Not that you are wrong but decadence was the real culprit. Just like now. By thinking that it can't go wrong because it has been going well for generations. And so it is no longer noticed when it goes wrong. Decadent

Pestilence was one of the main causes of the fall of the Roman Empire, along with the gradual rise in population, technological advancements, and the growing size of barbarian populations within or near Roman society. The Romans used olive pomace as their primary source of fuel. Pomace was much more efficient and suitable as a fuel than wood, which helped prevent extensive deforestation and desertification of the Mediterranean regions during the Roman period. This changed later with the Arab invasions, which brought a shift from agriculture to large-scale herding of sheep, goats, and camels, contributing to environmental degradation. A similar trend occurred across Europe later, driven by the Germanic populations’ preference for using wood as fuel and for construction.

why the ROMAN EMPIRE fell apart: I will tell you why and how the ordinary Roman citizen in the late ROMAN era did not want to serve in the Roman Army. The Roman citizen says to himself, why should I go to the army to serve whom? The EMPEROR who is CRAZY or the Generals who continue to make Civil Wars LOL absolutely NOT. But in the north live the Germanic tribes, they look at Rome, their mouths remain open, and they look. From Britain through Anatolia all the way to Africa, the wealth of Rome has no end. The Germanic tribes, the poor ones, they eat bones from hunger that's why the Germanic tribes decide to join the Roman Army voluntarily, but these people are completely Idiots, they don't understand anything else except the Army. However, one thing the Germans understand and that is the power of the ARMY. German Legionnaires who serve in the ROMAN ARMY tell their GENERAL if you give us a large sum of money, we will declare you Emperor. The GENERAL gives the money to the Germanic Legionnaires, they killed the EMPEROR and They put their GENERAL on Power a few months later they kills the General who they put in Power and put another GENERAL on Power because he gives them more money THE ROMAN ARMY started betraying the ROMAN EMPIRE to the one who gives them more MONEY and that's how the ROMAN EMPIRE fell apart

Economic crises don't pop out of nowhere.
The 3rd century crisis coincided with massive societal changes. The Mos Maiorum was being forgotten; Christianity was taking over; millions of migrants came into the empire; etc. It was a much different Rome. A worse Rome.

Slavery was a universal feature of pre-industrial societies. While I think economics is a useful tool, it does not address the reasons for the collapse of the Western European Empire. It fell as a result of external pressure from Northern Europe and internal decadence. It is very hard to maintain a culture’s values and ambition when riches and power become the sole pursuit of the elites. You don’t need to look further than that, success breeds complacency.
