Mimicking Magpie Delivers Rooster Crow at Sunrise as Cat Watches On

A tame magpie delivered a pitch-perfect rooster impersonation – crowing at sunrise in Broke, New South Wales, while his cat friend watches on.

Samantha Jayne Fernance filmed this video, which shows Morty the Australian magpie imitating a barnyard fowl while perched on a wooden fence. A pet cat, Omo, sits next to the bird, seemingly undisturbed by the rendition.

This is probably the most passively Australian video to ever exist, just the whole energy of it. It’s not trying to be Australian at all, but it’s so ridiculously Australian. A magpie crowing like a rooster at sunrise, gum trees in the background, on an Aussie farmhouse. Wow. I can even taste the vegemite on toast that is soon to come for breakfast.

Can you imagine looking around for this rooster that you KNOW you heard crowing and not being able to find it. Gotta love this bird. Making humans doubt their sanity since 2021.

It’s the sneaky mimics you have to watch out for, if an Albert Lyre bird frequented your yard you would question everything you heard but a maggie like this could confuse the hell out you… and if a maggie crowing like a rooster isn’t enough, it’s beautifully shot, with amazing scenery and a bloody cat sitting peacefully on the fence in striking distance of the bird.
