Mimicking Magpie

I thought that first horse neigh was a HORSE...but I saw the shudder of the magpie's voice box on the second neigh! I stand in awe of this beautiful bird -- their talent for mimicry knows no bounds!

I heard a horse, casual bird, a dog, ambulance, and finally R2D2

People don’t realise what brilliant mimics they are or how intelligent they are or that they can live for twenty odd years.

It's like listening to someone who's rapidly switching through radio stations. You hear just a fleeting moment of each one, and some stand out more than others.
I heard a dog, a horse, a car alarm, a door latch? and a host of other chirps and squawks that I'm sure are just a magpie's equivalent of us saying "Um...uh..." before moving on to the next sentence.
This is so fascinating to hear and to watch! :) God bless you, little magpie!

And what is equally fascinating is that they literally go and practice a new sound until they have perfected it. It's deliberately planned to master 😇

The Magpie that thinks that it's a Lyrebird... and a horse, car alarm etc .. LOL !!

I had no idea maggies could imitate like that, and with quite impressive range. I think it wants to be an Albert Lyre Bird but it's going to have to keep practicing to get that good. It seems that there is a different way in which different species of birds express themselves through imitation. While this one is running through many different imitations (including its own magpie warble... or was it imitating a friend?) a cockatoo seems more likely to latch onto one thing at a time and maybe repeat that for effect.
