I don’t really know how others understand but here’s my interpretation: I feel like this is really important as it comes from the Beatles. It’s a song looking back at the world from the eyes of stardom. Or maybe a better metaphor for a retrospective on humanity. Elenor Rigby seems to he having a meaningless life, picking up rice after a wedding and waiting at a window for someone but then we’re told she lives in a dream. Possibly meaning she lived a happy life to herself even though she never actually meant much to anyone else. (Implying she’s “lonely” hence where the song gets it’s name). Father Mackenzie is in a similar boat. He writes sermons and as implied by the line “no one comes near” he’s writing it with passion and feeling that barely anyone can match it. It also has the feeling that “no one comes near” means that no one really cared. Which is reinforced by the line “writing the words of a sermon no one will hear”. Darning just socks in the night is him working on something not many people will really care about but yet he does it because he can. “What does he care?” Implies that whatever is looking at humanity does not understand. As well as the question about Elenor Rigby “who is it for?” When referring to the face she wears to hopefully find love of her own. The chorus is the question “where do they come from and where do they all belong?” Which would mean the force is confused as to what purpose humanity has in this universe. The ending begins with us being told that Elenor died single, and never had kids. But she was still happy as she lived in a dream. Father Mackenzie burying her represents the fact that in all time. We, along with humanity will be forgotten “no one was saved”… At the end of the day, we’re all just people in this world, plopped together. The fact that Elenor, woman with hopes and dreams of happiness was buried by someone similar but never noticed them shows that we can be what we are, and not mean anything else to anybody. To summarize, this song is about how we can love our lives to the fullest, not caring what others thing and not thinking if others care. So be who you are in this world of lonely people. Be where you belong.

This song makes me cry, idk why. But at the same time, I listen to it with a straight face. This is such a good song!

Sounds super depressing, but honestly this sends me back to the day when I went to my best friends funeral after he committed suicide. It’s just such a dark feeling.. I remember looking around at all of the people who showed up for his funeral, the same people who turned a blind eye to his suffering while he was still alive.. Everyone knows but nobody wants to say it…. I miss him everyday. It’s been 4 years and still have a hole in my chest, wondering if there was something I could’ve said or done that would’ve been enough for him to stay.. I’ll never know.

I found this by accident, and was not so into it. And then one morning I woke up with this song persistently singing in my head, and now I can't stop listening to it

2:11 - protagonists is dying on the battlefield. Their lover holding them in their arms. You cannot hear the screaming or battle roaring behind them, just the music. 2:36 - lover realizes that the protagonist has died. They could not save them. As the wipe away the tears and dirt that has clung to their face you can see their demeanour change. The once bright and happy soul has been broken. 3:40 - love interest rises from the ashes, the battle seeming to have stopped around them. They raise they’re sword. The are no longer the love interest. ~ beginning of villain arc ~

I know a lot of people are saying this gives them the vibes of a villain doing something bad, or a battlefield.. but for some reason this gives me the vibes of walking into the school hallway with headphones on, and seeing everyone walk by in slow motion. You see the high-school sweethearts flirting w each other and they look like a picture perfect couple, but in reality they have a lot of problems & aren’t happy together. You see the popular girl flaunting all her expensive clothes & jewelry, but underneath all that her family is having financial issues and she doesn’t want anyone to know. You see everyone wearing a mask of the person they want to represent, the person they want you to see. Not who they actually are, and you know they’re all just acting. Hence why i think “Look at all the lonely people” fits well with this scenario.

Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby
Picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window
Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Father McKenzie
Writing the words of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working
Darning his socks in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care?
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby
Died in the church and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie
Wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved
All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people (ah, look at all the lonely people)
Where do they all belong?
