Insanity” is a misnomer.

It is described in another place how his armor was difficult to move in and a source of constant physical pain. It is further described how he used these sources of discomfort and pain to mentally concentrate and augment his connection with the Dark Side of the Force.

I submit to you then that “insanity” is an insufficient description. The type of stimuli that he subjected himself to in order to harness the dark energies and yet maintain a sense of purpose and direction can hardly Be imagined. New terminology is needed to describe his state of consciousness.
