👉 Learn all about the discriminant of quadratic equations. A quadratic equation is an equation whose highest power on its variable(s) is 2. The discriminant of a quadratic equation is a formula which is used to determine the type of roots (solutions) the quadratic equation have.

The discriminant of a quadratic equation is given by d = b^2 - 4ac, where a is the coefficient of the quadratic term (x^2), b is the coefficient of the linear term (x) and c is the constant term. If the discriminant is a positive number, then the quadratic equation will have two real and distinct roots. If the discriminant is equal to 0, then the quadratic equation has two real and equal roots. If the discriminant is a negative number, then the quadratic equation will have two complex roots.

Note that the quadratic equation must be set equal to 0 before a, b, and c can be extracted. If the quadratic equation is not set equal to 0, then all the terms of the equation is taken to one side of the equality sign so that the other side of the equality sign will be 0.

The only reason this video does not have more likes is because everyone is trying to finish their homework

I have watched some of your videos and they are really helpful to me. I am in Algebra 2 and your videos have really helped me strengthen what I know and to remind me of things I should know. If you could like this comment, it would mean the world to me. Thank you.

The video took a while to load and I am in a dark room so when it started I got soo scared because I thought it was the reflection on my screen.

Brian McLogan is the Scotty Kilmer (auto repair) equivalent channel. Super concise, clear, but then you're left with extra bolts and questions lol. NOT A COMPLAINT, before I start a topic in my online class, I first watch a B.McLogan video to get the concept and then I'm not as confused as I go through the material. Often times, the class teaches a dumber way to do it and I go back and watch it again and use his method. My go to math tutor, you rock !

correct me if i'm wrong but is the discriminant is 0 the it only means that it has one equal root that isnt necessarily rational e.g. the quadratic (x+√2)(x+√2) has an irrational root but when you expand out and calculate the discriminant it still has a discriminant of 0 meaning this is one that violates ur rule

Using this to revise for my math exam tomorrow that contains a few questions with the discriminant. 👍

Wouldnt it have been simpler to just look at d=0 d<0 and d>0 rather than square numbers and so on?

saying it's a "real rational root" is redundant....if the number is rational, then it is obviously real....keep making videos, my class luvs them.
