The term 'discriminant' rings a bell from around the matrix chapter. Can these two fields relate in any way?

This got me puzzled
x(x-2) = (x-2)^2, so
x(x-2) = (x-2)(x-2), so / (x-2)
x = x-2, so
x-x = -2
0 = -2
The only solution is actually 2, but why are we getting this nonsense? :)
