Here's a look under the hood and underneath the Mazda CX-9 crossover utility vehicle!

The Mazda CX-9 is the largest vehicle in Mazda's lineup and Mazda has chosen its most powerful engine yet, the 2.5L Turbo charged 4 cylinder Skyactiv engine. It's paired with a traditional 6-speed automatic transmission and AWD.

In this video we take a detailed look under the hood at the subsystems, such as the air intake, fuel, engine, timing, drive belt, cooling, transmission and electrical systems. We also take a look underneath the CX-9 at the exhaust, brakes, suspension, steering and fuel delivery system.

I used to be a service technician at El Cajon Mazda. The customers came in for 5k service all day because it was mechanically good no major issues.

I am watching this channel before I buy any car, the best reviews of exactly what I care about.

I am going to buy a new 2021 Cx-9 vehicle, and this review gave me a good idea about the suspension system maintenance. I now understand that the lower control arm is easy to replace but handling the upper control arm is a nightmare. Showing the rear axle that connects the rear differential is very useful, so this is a AWD for family purposes and not for a rough off-road drive. Also, the anti-roll bar with links that needs a frequent fix. I AM Not sure about the rust but I am living in a very warm and dry climate, if I move to a humid place close to the sea that would be problematic.

Other items that may be important to note that I have encountered on the CX-9. High pressure fuel pump failures that cause metal particles to damage the injectors. Cracks between two and three cylinders in the exhaust port.

I bought one new in 2017, and I still really love driving it. BUT, it needed a new engine two years ago at 92K miles due to a blown head gasket as commented below. I never towed anything, mostly freeway miles. Dealer quoted $11, 600!! We complained to the owner, who knocked the price down nearly 80%. The transmission blew a seal a couple months ago. $420 later it's fixed. Front control arms squeak madly, and one strut leaks, but at $3, 000 I'm willing to put up with it. I feel like I'm borrowed time. I'll never buy another Mazda.

There were a number of comments addressing the rust, with some surprise, on the under carriage of this Mazda CX-9. Unfortunately, all cars, at least those made with metal will rust/oxidize, here in Central New York. The reason isn't a surprise, we have long cold winters with over 130 inches of snow and spring and fall with a lot of rain. Of course, the large amount of road salt doesn't help either. So, no surprise, the cars here are exposed to lots of moisture and salt and never able to dry out. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the rust you see here isn't a Mazda issue, but a function of the conditions this Mazda was driven.

Rustproof and it will be a great reliable vehicle. Aside from the metal choices you pointed out I am really impressed with Mazda's new designs.

exhaust gases are inert so they dont get reburnt as you say

EGR works by provided some inert gases to combustion to act as absorbents of combustion heat to reduce peak in-cylinder temperatures, this reduced possibity of knocking and NO
x produced since high in cylinder temperatures promote knocking and formation of NOx, another primary benefit of EGR is you can have larger throttle opening to compensate for diluting the air with exhaust gases this helps reduces pumping losses(how much effort the engine uses to suck and blow air).

Great overview, we're in the market and the CX-9 is at the top of the list. I work on my own cars and this video will be a great resource when the car is out of warranty.

So happy to see an overall positive review. I think Mazda might actually be true in aiming to make good cars.

Great video! I own a 2018 CX-9 and love it, except for the fact that I've had to replace two motorized hatch lift struts already at a cost of $800 each. First one was under warranty.
