Let's get cozy! Scroll down past my defense of the Emily in Paris show on Netflix to get to the links! This video is totally NOT SPONSORED and I either bought everything myself or got it as a gift from a friend (i.e., NOT gifted from a brand), so these are definitely all my genuine, unpaid opinions : ) Sometimes we just need to share the things that make us happy in lockdown!
EMILY IN PARIS DEFENSE (NO SUBSTANTIVE SPOILERS): Apparently this show is "controversial" in the sense that it's been heavily criticized as being cliched. It may seem like it draws on a lot of cliches, but the show definitely reflects what my experience was like when I lived in Paris for two months. It was my first time in Europe, and like Emily, I did not speak French (although unlike Emily, I was traveling with someone who was fluent). I like to think that I was a little less naive than Emily comes across, but as an American in Europe for the first time, I think we can be a little more attuned to the cliches because that's kind of what we come to expect. I definitely had people be incredibly rude to me outright (e.g., one salesperson straight up suggested I just shop at a different store), and I definitely experienced the "Flirty Frenchman" (e.g., one guy hit on me while on a date with another woman, and told that woman he'd rather go home with me instead...so I guess this was flirty and rude all in one). Plus, we all kinda hate Carrie on SATC too, but it was still a lovely, fun show with a lot of resonance. I'll admit there are problems with the show, such as 1) if this is her first time in Europe, why don't we at least see her plan more weekend trips, or at least think about going out of town on the train instead of just to her friend's place on invitation...everything is so much closer and more accessible to her now; 2) Normandy is not that far from Paris...it's a day trip; I don't understand why it's made out to be thousands of miles away; 3) she doesn't seem to have a character arc, but I can totally forgive this because 1000% I'm sure there will be subsequent seasons, and we do actually see her make bad decisions, which is setting her up for some character growth down the line. I stand by my opinion and think it's worth a watch! You may still disagree, but please be kind in the comments
