I restored a 1976 sailboat. It took me quite a few years of work to make it safe to sail on Lake Michigan. I discovered the beauty in its imperfections and embraced them so that I may enjoy the boat. I called her Wabi Sabi.

侘び寂の答えは人生を掛けて探し続ける日本人の美学です。

時の経過もまた美。
古くなる物を汚いと取るか歴史と取るか。

This quote from the video sums it up for me: "Wabi Sabi is about the beauty of imperfection".

Actually not only western culture idolizes perfection, Chinese culture also pursues completeness and togetherness. So it is really beautiful to appreciate the difference between cultures of nations.

as i teach myself Shodo calligraphy, as a calligrapher trained in western (Roman script) tradition, the idea of WabiSabi is mind-boggling! that there is beauty in Imperfection, ties in perfectly with the concept of Enso : the Circle made in a single stroke... IMperfect or otherwise!

As a westerner, I always have been enticed by Zen. Even Wabi Sabi seems to come from a different idea of imperfection, it has clear harmony with my Catholic belief that we are all broken Wessels
of God's Creation only to be repaired and made even more beautiful than expected. Our artists took this idea to mean that no blemish is to be found after regained holiness. But that is not what the Monks and Church fathers meant.
I think they were more in the Wabi Sabi tradition even though it was never expressed in art. Modern Western art came from the iconography that revered perfection ideally. Much later artists imitate nature and they still did that "ideally". Even when the impressionists came to learn Japanese art, they still meant perfection.
Wabi Sabi is not a practical reality here. Our idea of recycling is lacking the sense of philosophical refinement that Zen can deliver.

You don’t explain Wabi in three minutes.
You apply it over a lifetime.
You can follow all the knowledge in the world in just three minutes. But if you cannot apply it in your life, then you missed the boat.

I absolutely love 侘び寂び, there's a real profound reason that it's becoming so popular even outside of Japan. It's a great reminder to appreciate the simple & transient things in this life
