I do this all the time. I usually forget about it when I get back to my computer, but then remember it when I'm ready to go to sleep.

Answer: yes, I think it is. Never thought about it before, but now that you mentioned it, I'm the only one in my immediate world who does this.

Yes! And the hardest part about this is that while being a mom of young kids you actually never have time to devote to those quick curiosities because those moments are always taken over by everyone else’s needs (hello potty and snack needs every single free second). After not getting to indulge them for a while it can feel difficult to be in touch with my own inner world.

YES! Absolutely. It runs in the back of my head all the time, but is definitely so much more noisy while I'm doing my mom chores. Like every single thing I touch reminds me of another thing I need to research / look up / buy / figure out etc.

autistic here and yes. After folding loundry I needed to research which animals - beside butterflies - also experience metamorphosis. Frogs and Salamander. Flys, bugs, dragonflys, bees and ants. Some crabs, hummer and also some snails.

LOL! Yes. And I feel good when I get started on a "dive". It is like a background program that is running all the time, good description.

Not weird at all and I'm 100% relating. One of my most recent rabbit holes was the dead man walking tornado that happened in TX. I feel like I can give a dissertation about how and why it was so bad. I also recently learned about the origin of the insult "Nimrod" that we use today to mean idiot. Originally the King Nimrod from the Bible was a great hunter, and people in the 1800's would call someone a Nimrod ironically to say they suck at hunting. Then come the 1950's with the Looney Toons where Bugs and Daffy called Elmer Fudd a Nimrod with the same 1800's sense of irony but the young audience misunderstood and used it to more directly call someone a idiot outside of a hunting context.

I do this almost daily. I'm retired (sooner than I thought I'd be) and still trying to figure out how to fill my days, so I watch a lot of videos & follow social media, which gives me a ton of things that I instantly NEED to look up. The latest was a twitter account of an archeologist who is working to uncover Neolithic Standing Stone Circles of AlUla in north-west Arabia. I went down a lovely rabbit hole looking at all they've uncovered & the papers they're submitting to join the UNESCO WorldHeritage list. I have so many different special interests that I can usually find a good rabbit hole to meander down when my brain is in the mood for it. I love that I have the time to do this now.

I do the same.
A little hack that helps me, is I do screen grabs of things I want to look up later.

I keep a running grocery list taped to the door of the microwave... and, years ago, from when I was a kid in the 70s onward, I kept a running list of things to look up at the public library. I used to go once or twice per week! In the 90s, everything changed when I got my first PC and America Online.

I don't usually have a running list...I just tend to look up the thing immediately! I have to remind myself not to do this too much during conversations, though, because most people kinda just want to talk and not actually find out the exact answer to the question.

Oh... I do this ALL the time lol
"Is alkaline powder made with night shade vegetables?"
"how much alkaloid content is in chocolate?"
"can I create dutch chocolate with night shade vegetables?

- Research kidney food
- Research leaf vacuums

Also taking notes on things I've already read or listened to

- Take notes on #397: How to Move Forward, Even in Survival Mode

Look up the term "nerd sniping". Then look up the relevant xkcd comic. And then if you binge through the xkcd archives there are other comics that deal with autistic distractibility (though not by that name, just as a general phenomenon among nerds).

Xckd is prime autistic literature, really.

Oh, I WOULD do this, if my brain could contain a list. Instead, I drop whatever I'm doing and search it up real fast, in true AuDHD fashion.

I do it as well. Definitely not weird, but definitely distracting 😂

Yup!! One of the things I search are the etymology of words! Helps a lot to understand the meaning of words specially since I speak a romance language so it's easier to relate with the latin or greek origin :D
For example the word inertia when I was trying to understand autistic inertia! In spanish there is the word inerte that means not moving so there you go I instantly understood better the word! :)

Oh wow! This is SO me. I usually forget what it was I just HAD to research, once I sit down and have the time to. Eventually though I remember and by that time, I have a bunch of other VERY pressing things to research after the first has been 'rabbit-holed'. Topics can be so random.
I often have dozens notes of things I scribble down throughout the day too - awaiting rabbit hole deep dive investigations. There is never a dull moment in the mind of an Autistic individual.

Yes!! I do that too 🙂
Thats why I‘m so thankful for living in a time where there are smartphones! I can‘t wait to get to know the things I ask myself - researching many things a day 🤗
It‘s so satisfying 😌
