Use an Excel Pivot Table to Group Data by Age Bracket

Several viewers asked me to demonstrate some other ways to -Group a Field- in a Pivot Table. In this tutorial, I show you how to create a Frequency Report by Age Bracket.

Before I start the Pivot Table Demonstration, I show you how to calculate someone's age using the -undocumented- =DATEDIF() Function in Excel.

In the Pivot Table, I change the result from -Summarize Values By- to the -Show Vales As- setting. Finally, I apply Conditional Formatting to the Pivot Table.

Can I just say you are a life savior!!! I am from a medical background and always found IT programs a bit difficult to understand...yes even simple functions of Word Excel baffle me! Your instructions are so simple to follow and although I use Open office, I still managed to translate your instructions on it successfully. My clinical audit looks awesome now, thanks to you! God bless!!!

Watching this now (July 27, 2016), the same day you created this video four years ago. Thank you for posting this vid. I needed this badly today at work.

Thank you very much for your quick reply!
In the source table I changed the cell formatting of the "Age" column from 'Number' to 'General' and then refreshed the pivot table and it worked - the grouping was automatically updated to 10-11 12-13 14-15 an so on! I'm so happy!
Thank you so so much! I've learned such a great deal from your videos!

Thanks for your kind words about my tutorials.

Here are the key points for grouping by age in a Pivot Table:
1) Drag Age Field into either Row or Column to get unique (text) values for ages
2) Select single cell prior to Grouping Field
3) Select proper "increment" - e.g. by 2
4) Drag Age Field a second time - this time into Values - use the COUNT Function

DATEDIF - is a great function - remember that it counts complete years / complete months, etc.
