You left out an important use. Tube amps don't sound that great turned down to practice levels, so put the volume pedal in the effects loop and you can crank the tube amp to get the great tones, but turn it down to bedroom levels with the pedal.

Thank you for the great explanation. One thing I’m after is, low volume but still overdrive sound. I have a Blues Jr and a tube screamer. However, I can’t play loud when the family is home. So I’m looking to have lower volume but still some overdrive/distortion. Would a volume pedal accomplish that?
