Controversial Thoughts: The Dangers of Sunscreen!

Sunlight leads to a healthy microbiome!

Sunlight gets such a bad rap these days, but it has SO many benefits that cannot be ignored...

You haven't been told the whole story of sunlight, but I do my best to take you down the rabbit hole with me in this video.

I talk about the benefits of sunlight beyond vitamin D (immune benefits and more- do we still remember that an immune system works for us?), dangers of mainstream sunscreens and what I recommend instead while you are developing a good base tan.

As we head into winter, getting sunlight or UVA/UVB from sunlamps is more important than ever especially with a seasonal virus (ahem!) floating around!

I've never used sunscreen, but I did buy into the anti-sun narrative and used to stay inside a lot and wear a lot of clothes. I was white as a ghost. For a year now I have been getting out in the sun for an hour or two every day in Texas, starting with a slow build up. Now I am very tan and my skin is healthier and thicker. Even when my skin gets a little red, it does not burn. I feel much better and it reminds me of when I was a kid and a bit of a beach bum. Those were the days. The feeling of sunshine on my shoulders really does make me happy.

This year the company Valisure detected many sunscreens to have benzene, a carcinogen. It's weird how dermatologists strongly recommend sunscreen when they have major toxic ingredients. Same how dentists strongly recommend Fluoride, also a definite known carcinogen. Dr. Paul should tackle Fluoride-gate next! Thank you Paul, you're pretty much the only trustworthy loyal doctor worth listening to.

Thank you for this nice video. The biggest issue is when people spray sunscreen in a busy area forcing everyone around to inhale those harmful chemicals

Ever since going to keto/carnivore, I can sit outside all day long in the summer without burning. I live in Saudi Arabia at about 26° North. Only burn I’ve had since changing how I eat was on my scalp when I shaved my head. Wasn’t pleasant but in the past I would’ve been burnt to a crisp all over.

I have not used sunscreen in years. Several months after eating carnivore, I went for a run on the trail. I was out over an hour and later, I realized that I had not burned. I've eaten carnivore for 3 years and I never burn no matter how long I am in the sunlight.

Since starting with Atkins, then LCHF, then Paleo and finally going full carnivore I haven't used sun screens and haven't had a sunburn.

It's been 16 years now.

I live in Germany and have been on holiday in Italy several times.

I early on in my nutitional journey found Bruce Fife. His opinions convinced me to switch to saturated fats, now animal fats only.

Even my vegetarian daughter can go into the sun without sun screen, she eats butter, olive oil, and coconut oil.

My husband has light skin and freckles. He burned terribly in the past. Now he just gets a little redness in the spring.

I fell for the sunscreen nonsense a few years ago... i walked around an entire summer completely covered in it and was as white as paper.

Astaxanthin is something one can take to help protect the skin while the skin gets dark. Great for a number of issues.

I'm love my improving sun tolerance from low PUFA for awhile now.

I need to use caution still, due to less sun than I should have, but a month ago I was fishing for 12 hours, sunny and little to no clouds.

I had to cover up the last few hours, but was barely red, and better by the next day.

I would buy the tallow-zinc-beeswax sunscreen. I still believe in covering the face and applying to nose and cheeks.

What about children? Dermatologists say the children should wear it especially daily during summer ☀️ Can you please share insight on this?

Hey Paul, i remember reading a book on sunlight, the author suggested that you need to exposure a high percent of your body to sunlight like shirtless and short pants for your body to know it's being hit by the sun to produce melatonin. If covered up to much those few select spots exposed would otherwise burn. Also i do a high noon sunbath session or within a couple of hours before or after, nude would be best or as close to that as you can.Lay down on your lawn chair or towels on the ground.Set a egg timer for 3-5 minutes, if highly fair skin start with 3 min or 2 min if your really worried about burning. The key is never to burn and no sunscreen and fully exposed.Start on your stomach or back, flip after first 3 min exposer to each side, then flip head to toe, do the same time of exposure to each side again so like a session of 3 mins per side lasts 12 mins in total. That's it your done for the day.Do this at least every other day or everyday over a couple of weeks you will be able to add more time til each exposed side is at 15 mins, a hour session at high noon. This would be like over a couple to 3 months, once conditioned this way, then you can go naked all day and not get burned with no sunscreen on to do it.

By the way, just through meditative breathing, I can lower my blood pressure in about 60-90 seconds to almost too as low as I want it to be. Because of my years of practice, I already have a very healthy BP, but when I show up to doctors' offices it can go up a bit from nerves because Doctors make me anxious. In the time it takes a nurse to get the BP cuff out, I can take my BP down to 110/60. Actually, lately, I have been accidentally taking it down a little too low. Then they have to tell me to bring it back up to healthy range. I have complete control over my BP through breathing. The only time that my BP is high and I have a hard time bringing it down is when I have a migraine. That is the one time I have a hard time breathing and meditating even though it could help me rid myself of the migraine.

Melanomas and sunlight has never made sense. Melanomas arise from neural crest cells and can arise ANYWHERE. Some people get melanomas in the gut, in the lung etc. Certainly areas not exposed to sunlight.

My mother developed a melanoma on the sole of her foot. She certainly wasn’t sunbathing with her feet straight up in the air.

Coconut oil has natural spf about 6% or so and does NOT destroy the coral reefs

Like your thoughts, but do you think it would be possible to attach the link for the papers that you are referring too?
