How Stata Treats Missing Values

Stata can sometimes confuse new users with how missing values are treated. This video will remove some of the mystery and help you understand some of the issues with missing values.

Hello Alan,
thank you for explaining how to treat missing values in stata. I didn't know the trick to write " " in order to still use that value even though it is missing. Can I use the same command for numeric values? I mean, if I have a missing number for x (in your data set for instance) could I put " " as well in order for stata to still use this variable? I have some missing numeric values in my data set but I do not want stata to "kick" them out, you know?
I hofe I could make myself clear, since I am not very good at handeling stata - especially the technical terms when they are not in my mother tounge, ....

I am running a logistic regression but do not want the state to exclude the cases where there are missing values in one or two vars. to overcome the "listwise deletion". How can I do that?
Also, I understand that I need to show that my file is missing at random, how can I show this?

Hi Alan,

I would like to destring a migrant variable which has 'blank' values and 'name' values. For instance, 'John Smith' would be an entry if there was a migrant in a household. I need to destring this and then recode it to 1 (if there is a name) and 0 (if it is blank, meaning there aren't migrants in the household). Can you show me the code asap? Thank you
