Diver here. The most dangerous things in diving are ego and lack of appreciation for the environment you're in. Very few old "cowboys" in the diving community.

I used to teach scuba and I never understood deep freaks. There’s absolutely nothing down there to see that’s worth the considerable risk to your life. It’s just dark and cold, whereas all the things worth seeing are in the first ten meters.

This was a unwise thing to even attempt

What guy garmin tried to do was awesome, but nearly everyone in the dive community mutually agrees he was wildly out of his element doing this. From what I read, and what Ive heard in the tech diving community, MANY people tried telling him NOT to do it including some of the deepest divers currently alive - and he ignored it all.

May he rest in peace.

Some records are not meant to be broken. This is one of them.

Such a tragic reminder of how extreme sports can push both physical and mental limits. Respect to those who take on these challenges, but safety and preparation should always come first.

The instant I saw that the dive team was only 300 feet I already knew that dude was a gonner. 300 feet only! 1200 - 300 = 900 feet to go!

Imagine diving in the water and having a feeling to sleep because you went beyond on what you can handle 😱

This is a stark reminder that no record is worth risking your life for. 🕶️

I’m a scuba diver and while I have nowhere near the experience other divers do, I’m still keenly aware of the very real dangers of deep diving, especially irresponsibly. While the sport of scuba diving is indeed one of the safest sports in the world, carelessness and ego get in the way fast. We as a uniquely abled, intelligent species yearn to push the boundaries to make the impossible a thing of the past. While his dream was admirable, his lack of humility and long-term professional experience sealed his doom. No self-amplification is worth it if one is ill-prepared.
I’m sorry this tragedy happened. May he rest in peace.

This sounds similar to the submarine tour to the Titanic. 🤦‍♂️

I am a retired master instructor with PADI. this should be saved as a precaution to all divers.

Riptides are NO joke and you wont know you are in one until you are miles away from shore.

I don’t have many fears, but open water and especially deep open water are on the top of that list
