A definite do-not-try-this-at-home-record! Budimir Šobat from Croatia looks to break a five-year-old record for the longest time breath held voluntarily (male).

This is an oxygen aided breath holding record. The last breaths he takes from the tank contains pure oxygen (still so impressive and not making this record less valuable). World record w/o oxygen aid is around 11.5 minutes.

When I was a teen, I could hold my breath for five minutes sitting still and I could swim two laps underwater (25 meters each way). One time, after swimming two laps underwater a few times in a row, I decided to go for more. I made it about half way into a third lap, when I came up, took a breath, and immediately passed out. Fortunately my friend pulled me back up and I regained consciousness, having no idea I had passed out. I stopped trying to see how long I could hold my breath after that. There's no reason to push holding your breath under water when you are much safer just holding you breath while laying in bed.
