The real reason is for safety purposes, they fall backward for controlled entry and reduces the risk of injury.

For anyone genuinely curious, its to prevent the mask/regulator being pulled out and the tank also breaks the water making the actual collision smoother.

Just a little tip for scuba diving, I saw your BCD had only 1 strap attached to your tank. Personally I prefer the BCDs with 2 straps for extra safety. I went diving a few days ago and a tank fell through one guy’s BCD and he was seriously injured.

A lot of training agencies stopped teaching the back roll entry in the early 90's (30 years ago). The reason being is that most people roll all the way through in the water and then hit their head on the side of the boat.
Also, you don't wear your mask on your forehead like this. Main reason is if a wave hits you in the face you'll likely loose your mask. And it is a sign of distress on the surface.
At least she has all of her hoses held in place with connectors/clips.
I taught for 15 years, with most of that in SoCal. I've seen this type of crap and just laugh at people like this when they loose a mask or crock themselves doing back roll entries.

All my brain cells died after hearing this answer.
The real reason is the jumping forward increases the chances of knocking your diving gear when you impact the water. This technique is called backward roll entry and usually done from smaller boats where the height of the jump is very less, for bigger boats/ships which are more stable we use Giant stride method.
