The Vintage Read Show So excited to start another book series!
Royal Secrets by Stephen Barry is another affectionate look at life in service to the Royal family.
Stephen Barry started as a footman at a very young age and worked his way up to become Prince Charles's first valet.
As he tells us his story, we hear many fun anecdotes about his employers and other faithful retainers.
In this episode we hear about Stephen's first days at the palace as a "giggling footman".

Shawna. Regarding Princess Anne's love of horses, I once read that, when enquiring if the young Princess Anne had a boyfriend, a gentleman was advised by the Duke of Edinburgh, 'Oh no if it doesn't fart and eat hay she's not interested!'

Shawna, You remind me so much of my grade 11 English Teacher!! She spent a lot of time reading excerpts from the books we 'laboured through on our own', and brought them to life, as she posed questions to us. I Loved her classes, looked forward to discussing what we read at home, and had the straight A's through the year! That was a long time ago, but that Teacher still stands out to me. ❤ Of course there was the grade 6 teacher, a man, who told me to 'get a new laugh' as he didn't like mine??!! 🤷‍♀

The attention to detail that footmen have to be the same height shows how much effort went into presenting the glorious pomp & ceremony. Never gave it a thought before but yeah it wud look awkward with 2 footmen of wildly different heights standing on the foot plate.

Giggling viewer here, lovely! I was with Stephen right up to hand washing the hankies! I'm loving this book. His initial wonderment of being on the inside looking out at the crowd showed his true appreciation for his position. His attention to detail sounds amazing. I left my house with mascara on both my top lashes, and one set of bottom lashes. One. Yakitty-scmackitty on the phone while I was putting on makeup. I need a Stephen in my life...😂💜
