How heavy do you need to lift, to be able to build muscle after 40? Good question...well you might be surprised, but you don’t need to lift heavy weights to build muscle. If you have lingering injuries, that is okay, you can use lighter weights to not put stress on your joints from previous injuries.

If your goal is to gain strength then you need to lift heavy with low reps. If your goal is to build muscle then you want to lift lighter weights with more reps. Light weight is different for everybody, you want to aim for the 8-12 rep range to build muscle. You want to be near failure at the end of the rep range, that is how you know if you are lifting a heavy enough weight.

Lifting with lighter weights and high reps is going to protect your joints from new injuries, or agitating previous injuries.

Alright guys, that wraps up this video tutorial on how heavy you should lift to build muscle after 40. Make sure to subscribe to our channel for more videos on how to build muscle after 40 to get ripped.

Great video, great advice. I'm 77 and I started with 10 lb dumbbells, then bought 15s & recently bought 20s. I'm starting with 8 repsX2 & then 6 reps when I use the 20s. I'm nicely building muscle but like you said I'm careful not to injure myself. If it is a really difficult set for me I'll drop back & do 15-20 reps or go to failure.

I’m 64 and still lifting. At 6’4, ” I once weighed about 320lbs and would grab every 45lb plate in the gym. Now, I lift much lighter with more volume. My joints are much happier these days and I look pretty damn good too!

Hi Gary, I absolutely love the videos!!! I used to be a bodybuilder pressing 360 pounds when I was 65. In 2019 I was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer. After 6 months of chemotherapy, 28 sessions of radiation and four surgeries, I went from weighing 245 pounds to 180 pounds in less than 6 months. My final surgery was June of 2020. I'm following your videos, keeping the weights light and now I'm back to weighing 220 pounds with great muscle gains! Thanks Gary you are so awesome!!!

Amen brother! I did that this spring. Was on a roll getting strong good gains. Then I went to quick. Didn't really go to heavy. I didn't warm up enough. Now at 47 warming up very important. Can't jump in like I'm 25.

You are right. Go high rep for us old guys. Since I went lighter....zero injuries and I am growing more. I would even advise the younger folks to do the same.

I’m 75, been training 56 years . Very good advice, once I build my home gym, much easier to do when you don’t have pressure from gym competition, I go between 15 to 30 reps, 80%

When I was younger, I used to lift heavy and frequently go to failure. Picked up some injuries here and there. My physiotherapist recently told me to put about 70% effort into my training. A solid piece of advice I tell you

THX Gary, This is exactly what I've been doing and really works well.I'm 62 been lifting since I was 15, played football, basketball, baseball from 8 yrs old until 12th grade and plan on lifting weights the rest of my life as long as I can move.Implimenting this strategy that you say and what I've been doing hopefully I will train for many years to come. I train 6 days a week alternating muscle groups daily, i'm holistic doing all the phytonutrients, herbs, natural raw fruits and veggies that keep inflammation down and slow oxidation.I love your channel, I would be training anyway but having a channel like this that I can watch weekly even keeps my drive up that much more! Thx for your channel, your great informative training building muscle tips and keep up the great work!Your an inspiration, , thank you...

I am 56, been working out for almost 30 years. But been experiencing shoulder pain in various spots over the last few years. Tried your tri con method for the last 2 weeks, my shoulder feels good with relatively heavy weight. Thanks man for your teaching. Big fan

You got excellent tutorial methods. Love your tricon shoulder and upper arm superset workouts. I'm 63 and restarted working out again back in 11/20 after a major acchilles tendon injury. Loving it again!
