Episode 118

This time on THE IDENT REVIEW, we'll be switching over to CHANNEL 4 to take a look at the 25 new sequences that have appeared as part of the channel's 2023 rebrand! Lots to look at, lots to get through, all packed with great variety and intrigue! Let's get going!

The Ident Review began in May 2018 and since has spawned over 100 episodes and even a spin-off show, the Ident Review Extra! It remains a firm AMTV favourite to this day!

I don't think anyone has mentioned this but the ritual represented in Ident 1 is, I believe, from Zoroastrianism. Fun fact: That's also the religion Freddie Mercury followed as part of his roots :)

These may likely be the best idents from Channel Four (along with the 1982 idents) and the best television idents ever (along with the 1991 BBC Two idents), since they put a lot of great work into these idents and the result looked fantastic. The concept is also something that no other British TV network like the BBC has ever done before.

Just realised you can see the logo (although rather abstract) at 8:24.

The elephant part reminds me of the 2012 Nike advert. The part when Gerard Pique and Andres Iniesta see a ball coming through, and they follow.

I pointed out 17:00 looks like ITVs Rugby World Cup intro from 2011.

21:00 looks like Robbie Williams.

20:16, It's a human heart or scan of the human body/vascular system. The text "Acc V Spot Magn Det WD" and the text after it is the read out from an electron microscope.The rest of the information is about the voltage and focus of the microscope among other things. Actually though what I really love, is how the one directly previous has a muffled thumping kick from the music in the club and then transitions into the one of the scan where the kick is a human heart beat. So clever!

These are some of the best idents I've ever seen, and a great rebrand for Channel 4. Imagine if these were 25 different full length idents though. That would be a treat.

That first ident that was like an animation in the convenience store, I loved. I also liked the 4 in flames - really powerful ❤

I spotted the channel 4 logo in the fan heater one, 8:24 the black metal bit on the heater and the shadows.

Best part of the Elephant one is the kinda dual meaning, not only the literal elephant in the room to address but just the fact there's no 4 logo makes you question if someone will bring up metaphorical elephant of "why is there no 4 logo here"

I really like these, they're quite mesmerising, a massive improvement from the giant silver robot, I was never overly keen on that one mainly because of the lack of colour, but these new idents have plenty colour and they also show the logo in it's full form for the first time since the 2004-2015 look.🙂

Edit: I wonder....when I make ident review on every ident from Brazil like rede globo, bandeirantes, rede tv, etc. I'll need some research in order to find out what makes it so remarkable.

I immediately thought about the Pickled Pigeon crisps in the shop in the "Identity" ident related to the pigeons that got crushed on the 4 logo on the old idents. 🤔

I like the infinite loop style of these idents, that’s the aspect I like the best of this group.
The sequence with the video tape effect is my favourite but switching to a 4:3 aspect ratio would have been perfect. As the camera passes through the square section of the 4 logo would’ve mead the transitions easy to do, I think they dropped the ball there.

You forgot to mention the tune played at the first part of release was the four score

If Channel 4 were to launch a kids channel and hire me to design the idents, one of them would portray a cartoon ninja throwing 4 shurikens, slowed down briefly to show them in a formation styled after one of the Circles idents, another would portray a 7-9 year old girl playing an electric guitar playing what starts as a typical rock tune but soon transitions into a rock rendition of the 1992 Channel 4 tune!

7:24 the 4 in the fan one can be found if you look left of the fan at the back. It's made up of the black bit of the fan at the back and the shadow on the wall

I've always liked channel 4 more than other broadcasters. I love how channel four have never been afraid to be different being contravercial in what it broadcasts. This is the broadcaster I truly grew up with as it started broadcasting 2nd Nov 1982 I was only 10 yrs old. Ilove these new Idents alot of thought went into these and in my honest opinion are the best on terrestrial tv today. Thanks for sharing with us Adam. I love your channel been subscribed for awhile now. I loved the new sky kids idents u shared.❤
