So what are your thoughts? The Yoshino units are well built and my testing has shown they do very well. Im not a battery expert, but see the other video so you can decide for yourself. #exposed #solidstate #solar #yoshino

Apparently Yoshino has ticked off YouTube. Second teardown of this device I have seen today. Good work.

Ok I'm reading through these comments and I'm wondering if people actually know what a solid state battery is? The only difference is the electrolyte barrier between the anode and the cathode. For some, there will be a slight chemistry change but, nothing drastic. Normal electrolytes in a lifepo4 are usually a carbonate solvent (e.g. propylene carbonate (PC), ethylene carbonate (EC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), etc.) That combined with a type of separator film. The idea behind a solid state is the prevention of ion buildup on the anode crossing the electrolyte, passing through the separator and shoring on the the cathode, thus shorting the battery. Solid states would use a solid electrolyte/separator essentially negating the shorting problem and letting the batteries charge faster, charge at higher amps, and essentially live longer. However, they are still a lithium battery and punctures can still cause thermal runaway but, it takes a little more.

Honestly, I was VERY impressed with the battery. It didn't runaway until there was a lot of shorts, half of the battery was torn open, and there was a ton of damage. That much damage on a lead acid battery would do the same thing.

Do I think those were solid state batteries? No, not really. At 4:46 it's obvious there is some liquid electrolyte as the separator, at the bottom-left) is obviously saturated with a liquid; albeit not a lot. I think these should be considered a low volume electrolyte battery and more like a hybrid if there is such a description. I think they're close but, obviously not there just yet.

Yes the advertising as solid state is misleading. As discussed earlier. I questioned another person on their opinion as to what powered the system and got no comment from them. Yoshino page does however does specify these are powered by lithium ion batteries. I was bummed too thinking a new solid state battery had been engineered

Thank heavens for YouTubers like you! Not all about meaningless product placement and just reading the spec sheets. You buy it, you tear it down, you find and share the truth. Subscribed.

❤ Thank you! Your efforts, along with several other YoyTuber’s videos saved us from spending a fortune on these “solid state” power stations for our fire dept field charging of drone & radio batteries.
We have been looking to replace lithium tech after responding to horrific fires involving lithium chemistry batteries.

Thank you for taking the time to investigate this Brand. I have been very cautious with claims of being solid state battery without any proof until I came across a video the other day from another YouTuber who did the same thing you did and can't to the same conclusion. Thank you again, I really like all your content, top of the line 👍👍

Really enjoyed seeing how the inside of this unit is made. Thank you for sharing!

I just posted a teardown video on one of these a couple days ago. Always good to have multiple perspectives out there. Nice job!

I shot a cell with a bow, lol. It took two shots, but it ended up burning too. The part number on the cells leads to a safety data sheet for the battery that lists the chemical makeup. Two of the chemicals listed (one of which is nearly 5% of the total material) is a liquid solvent, which was marketed as a lithium ion battery electrolyte by the suppliers I found. It's likely soaked into a substrate of some kind, resulting in the sort of dry, crumbly texture of the electrolyte. But that's nothing new and it's definitely not a solid state battery. Cheers!

I wandered over to their booth a few times at CES while I was helping out at the Bluetti booth. They only had a couple people manning it and really couldn’t answer any of my questions about the products. I was quite disappointed.

I am really disappointed that you never mentioned that there is a lot of sealant in that unit. I think that was the main feature that customers would be interested in ;-)
Happy to see some real info instead of an advert masquerading as a review.

Thank you for the honest teardown. To often companies claim to have this or that, yet it's only discovered when it's cracked open.

As for it being solid state, well obviously that's not what I would have expected, sodium batteries are being made, however until the bigs start using and selling them, I would be skeptical about small companies being able to source them and being able to build them into their products.

As for Yoshino, not sure if they're lying, as some have equated lifepo4 batteries as solid state. I'm not sure if I would call a lifepo4 battery solid state, yet lifepo4 chemistry is far more stable than lithium ion types. That said perhaps they plan on using a different battery in the near future? And built a well made unit to accept the newer batteries when they become available?

Or perhaps they lied, either way it's nice to see under the hood.
Thanks

Don’t buy!!! Their own website states organic chemistry which is the liquid of lithium ion. They are misleading and won’t respond to basic questions and testing methods and data. Even the name is misleading with Japanese dialect and it’s a Chinese company . Glad you did a deeper dive..True YouTubers would but some won’t just to earn their commissions. Your honesty will be rewarded.

Voltage reveals chemical composition. Lion is 3.7V, LiFePo4 3.3V

The wet separator (the white tissue) is the indicator of a standard Li-Ion battery. The solid-state claim is a bogus one.
Using a solid-state battery is a pretty bold claim. I can't imagine how the manufacturer of the device thought that people believed them without checking...

Wow! Didn't expect to see that flame ball. You should have done an actual nail penetration test! 😂 Maybe on the next video? You should tag Undecided with Matt Ferrell since he just bought one, said it was solid state, and then never opened it up.

Now their website says "commonly accepted definition of solid state battery". 😂😂😂

Looks like it fits the definition of a solid state battery. This video and the online test report have assured me that it will be a good future buy compared to regular LiFePO4.
