After only five hours of activity, a new legacy server for World of Warcraft has been shut down by Blizzard. VG24/7 reports that the creator of the Flemyst server, which launched last Friday, received an unexpected cease and desist letter from Blizzard's lawyers. Flemyst was set to show players World of Warcraft as it stood during the release of 2007's Burning Crusade expansion.

*Shows retail footage*

Not really unexpected. Sad part is that the takedown notice was against the developer and not against the server.

Cause it would be embarrassing if everyone started to play legacy servers instead. Blizzard is fully aware that people prefer old wow, they're just too far down the rabbit hole to make the necessary changes for people to come back.

The real question is would legacy servers hosted by Blizzard not suffer the same fate as the dumbing down of World of Warcraft as before. It be impossible to cater to the two different audiences that would flock to legacy. Those from 2005 to 2010 who experienced the game when WoW was a phenomenon. The remnant of which scamper from private server to private server hoping to avoid the heel of Blizzard.

The other camp that would climb aboard is the current retail audience. Who would undoubtedly want to see what all the hype is about. Upon inspection, would find a much more unforgiving experience. Inevitably players from this camp would want the game revised upon with contemporary tastes accustom to their palate.

There can be no compromise in this regard. Compromise would open the flood gates to the complete re-homogenization of vanilla once again. It's what lead to the death of WoW the first time.

With the audacity Blizzard has treated it's original warcraft supporters by gutting the project to cater to a broader audience and by snuffing out any attempt to play it as it once was, I don't intend to stick around for watching WoW die a second time.

This really makes me feel hate for B. I can understand if they were going to do their own legacy servers, but if they're not then why not let other people do them?

Blizzard truly has become a shadow of itself since they got bought by Activizion

"Flem-ist". The server was called Felmyst.

Even in the description it's the wrong name.

How many editors did this get past? IGN has such a reputation to uphold!

The likely reason why Blizzard doesn't allow such thing is because they want to do it themselves when they simply decide to end content for WoW.

Either way, thanks for spreading the word

tbh I dont even play private servers but I think it is morally wrong of blizzard to not let anyone run a verision of their game they are not even using anymore. Or plan on using the the future. They may have the law on their side, but holding copyright claims on a game they dont even license anymore feels like an insult towards the fans that supported wow from the start. And helped them to build up their brand. I still enjoy legion tho, but I would tryout legacy server if blizzard released them.

I think the take downs are bc blizzard is intact working on legacy servers. Nintendo does the same thing. They did it with that Metroid 2 game then they released a remastered Metroid 2 themselves.

Gummy tried his best, he even suffers from a disease and that's the thanks from blizzard.

They should make a revamped version (better graphics/ character model) vanilla served, bc, wotlk, and progression server (vanilla to current)
