Yes they did sometimes smoke during flight, for some a way to cope with stress and for others because it was included in their standard rations.

Randy Larsen is a friend of mine. I used to fly rc planes at ARCA in Austin, Texas, until it just got too expensive for me. I sold every airplane I had (25 in all), including 5 edf jets. He has a great personality, and he is a lot of fun to be around. He taught me a lot. Great Airplane there Randy. I miss you, Buddy.

The smoke does not simulate contrails, it simultes the smokey engines they had. You can see this on planes like the c130 today.
