In this video I repair and restore a rare video game console called the SuperGRAFX. This console was a market failure, but that’s what makes it so interesting. This is an extremely thorough restoration that took over 8 hours to complete. Once I’m done with refurbishing the console, it’s better than new!

Thank you to everyone who notified me of this issue and how to fix it!

I love the amount of care you show in this. I see so many electronics YouTubers working on classic electronics and really not showing the proper practice. You take your time and work carefully. Very nice video, I've got mad respect.

One piece of criticism/advice on the refurb: Please, please file off a bit of the plastic peg in the centre of the console. Over time it pushes on the PCB and will produce cracks over time. It is absolutely not needed in holding the console together and no SGX refurbishment should be complete without. You'll thank me later :P
I did mine a few years ago and it still works amazing as my main PCE system :D

Loved to see some of your new tools in this video - your studio really feels like a bonafide electronics repair shop. And as always, amazed as to how you get great shots while doing such clean work - I can barely solder without a camera in my way!

Seeing you adding grease with the syringe and toggling the switch on and off while having the sexy saxophone in the back is definitely an experience in itself. 😄 Great video mate! I'm shocked that this console only had 5 games, this must have been quite the failure at the time.

When I was in Japan last month, I saw a Super Grafx in the junk bin at a store. It was still about $200 so I passed. Hope you were able to get a better deal.

Watching you clean off that flux was super satisfying.
The relaxing music also helped.

While I have no desire to restore or mod a SuperGRAFX for just 5 games, it was nice to see your process on doing this. Seeing the tools and chemicals you use to get the job done informs me on how to improve my own modding and restoration process.

Oh wow, I've never seen a "tweezer" soldering iron before - so cool, and must be a real time saver too!

Great video as always. It would also have been a good idea to replace the 7805 with a newer one. That and snipping the center post that tends to damage the traces on the PCB leading to the HuCard slot.

The most gorgeous looking console ever, now with an awesome restoration and mods. My 2nd most wanted console ever when I was a kid... The cherry would have to be a Konix Multisystem with a Macho Nacho restoration, I desperately wanted both these consoles when I was a kid. Such a pity the Konix never made it to market :(

I wish I had even 1/3 of the shred of talent you have when it comes to these projects. Nice job!

Not only do I know about it, but it has consistently been my most-wanted console of all time. I just never got around to getting one. I just play the games on my MiSTer. I still consider grabbing a real one from time to time, recapping it, and doing some mods. Still, definitely not a forgotten item. It's a gorgeous piece of work internally and externally IMO! Too bad about the library, but still an amazing piece. Nice video! Love watching your channel and Voultar. Great work!

Nice choice of music, thoroughly relaxing 😌

There is a screw pole (in the middle area) on the lower case that needs to be trimmed a couple of mm because it puts stress on the pcb that eventually causes it to crack. Look it up.

A beautiful video, and that background music, sung waves of the past of big band music to my soul. Beautiful.

I always liked the look of the SuperGrafx. It's got quite a charm to it.

Fun fact: the HuC6280A not only contains the CPU, but it also has a sound generator. 6 channels of wavetable synthesis and the last two channel can produce white noise. The "A" signifies a newer revision of the chip, which is supposed to fix the audible click that happened when switching wavetables on the original HuC6280.
