In urban combat, you would actually target a Merkava with a drone or shoot the tracks, which would force the tank crew to abandon the tank, so they can be picked off by a fighter squad.
Shooting the gun is only effective in game. Even if it's shortened, it can still fire. However, it does not force the tank crew to abandon the tank.
