In Season 5 of Star Trek: Lower Decks, the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos is tasked with closing "space potholes" — subspace rifts which are causing chaos in the Alpha Quadrant. Pothole duty would be easy for Jr. Officers Mariner, Boimler, Tendi and Rutherford... if they didn’t also have to deal with an Orion war, furious Klingons, diplomatic catastrophes, murder mysteries and scariest of all — their own career aspirations. This upcoming season is a celebration of this underdog crew who are dangerously close to being promoted out of the lower decks and into strange new Starfleet roles.

Star Trek: Lower Decks streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution. In Canada, it airs on Bell Media’s CTV Sci-Fi Channel. I love that Mariner lets Boimler drive them. She knows from that Season 3 episode that Boimler has traditionally been afraid of operating vehicles like that himself (he even refers to himself as a "natural passenger"), so him stepping up and overcoming that phobia is a big step and she's got his back on it. Boimler and Mariner, platonic life-partners FOREVER!

Lower Decks is already a good show if you've never seen Star Trek. But as someone who went in knowing nothing and over the years has slowly been watching the backlog of Star Trek shows, Lower Decks just gets better and better the more references and callbacks you begin to understand. It's rare to have something that feels like it's always rewarding diehard fans but is still just a good space romp for newbies too. Can't wait for Season 5 but will be so sad when it's over and the show wraps up.
