A native of Golden and Jefferson County, Dennis retired as a Captain from the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department in 2004. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado State University in English and Secondary Education, and a Masters Degree with Honors in American Military Studies from American Military University in Manassas, Virginia. He is currently an Affiliate Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Metropolitan State College of Denver.

He has authored three college text books in criminal justice and has recently published a study of the Civil War in the academic journal, Military History of the West, published by the University of North Texas, titled, "Desperate Courage: The Lancer Charge of Company B, 5th Texas Mounted Volunteers at the Battle of Val Verde, New Mexico Territory, February 21, 1862". In addition, the Denver Posse of the Westerners has published his 2010 article, "Coornap: The Investigation into the 1960 Murder of Adolph Coors III".

Today he is nearing completion of a book length manuscript titled, This Damned Country: Murder, Mayhem, War and Politics in Jefferson County, Colorado Territory, 1859-1876.
