Why Did Lithuania REJECT To Annex Kaliningrad From Russia?

This is Kaliningrad. A detached Russian territory acquired from Germany after the second world war. Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, many western countries took it upon themselves to isolate Russia. Kaliningrad was no exception, if you’ve seen the news recently. You’ll know that Kaliningrad is now a contentious point between the West and the Russian federation. Being surrounded by Nato members, it makes it hard for Russia to transfer goods back and forth. What is interesting about this.Is that Kaliningrad was at one point offered to be integrated within the Lithuanian SSR within the soviet union. Meaning that present day Lithuania could have kept the territory in its entirety.

Important fact that this territory was inhabited by Prussians, Lithuanians and increasingly Germans. By the start of 20th century majority of people were heavily germanized. Almost all the names of villages, towns and rivers are Lithuanian and Prussian (Baltic) origin. Everything has changed when soviets renamed all the names in 1946. Koenigsberg was and is called Karaliaučius in Lithuanian. East Prussia was often called Klein Litauen or Preussisch Litauen in 17-18th c. maps.

Even back then, Lithuania was planning independence. Making 20% of your population Russian and having the bulk of USSR navy would complicate the independence movement.

We Lithuanians, see this issue form beginning. 90% of Lithuanian population is etnich Lithuanians, Latvia and Estonia is completely, different story. Also these Russians who stay in Lithuania, reject to speak or learn Lithuanian language even of some Russians knows how to speak our Language they just don't speak it. For example, people from Ukraine, Belarus Spain, Brazil, USA learning how to speak our Language some of them speak fluently... So, Lithuania made a right call.

It's worth mentioning. After WWII according the Potsdam decision this area was given to USSR for protection for 50 years without any further plan. USSR is no more, and the 50 years have passed a long time ago. Russia has announced itself as a direct descendant of USSR, however it's questionable about how much it's legal according the international law. There's no precedence. The same goes about the Russian presence in the UN and Security Council.

Koenigsberg story remains not finished. The today's situation is abnormal and has no right to be respected.

Poland could've easily integrated Kaliningrad, but Russia wanted to give it to Lithuania, as they knew they would't be able to overpower them

It's Königsberg, not "Konigsberg". An umlaut is a game changer, both in spelling and in pronunciation terms, whether English speakers like it or not.

Lithuanian SSR was not a country but the part/colony of Russia (USSR). Only Kremlin decide where the borders of its colonies will be.

All Kaliningrad region towns and villages have Lithuanians names (they are written in lithuanian on Google Earth). For Example Kaliningrad - Karaliaučius.

With many more Russians in the country, Lithuania's membership in the EU and NATO could have been just as difficult and protracted as in Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine. In the latter case, it was clearly too late.

I don't know what "Kaliningrad" is, it's called "Königsberg", it's a sovereign German territory under Russian occupation.
