Most people would assume there is not much of a difference between Canada and the USA, but you would be very wrong! It's not the same. Sure, it's similar in that we speak the same language, products for the most part are familiar and even, depending on where you live of course, homes can be the same. But there are a ton of differences too!
1. The passion and pride that comes with being an American. I used to think we did a good job in Canada but Americans put us to shame! They fly their flags proudly, stand on their 1st amendments and show such amazing respect to those in the military to past and present, that risk their lives to this day. Have you ever been to Mount Rushmore during their evening ceremony? If not, you need to go. It's emotional and probably the first time as a Canadian that a realized just how deep Americans root themselves to their home and pay respect to those who protect it. I LOVED it.
2. Each state is almost like its own country. It's not, yet they are all so completely different. Their landscapes are incredibly different from desert and dry to beaches and humid, all the way to a frozen tundra, but also, each state is very different in its laws and politics. We have met so many people who have moved to a different state because of it.
3. Church is different. There are more church buildings and different denominations, but there is also so much more passion. From my personal experience, most Canadian churches are asleep. We have walked into a few churches stateside where you can feel the Holy Spirit, the word was not fluffy to make you feel better but rather challenge you and people would die for their belief in God. Our teens who we previously had to bribe to go to church back home began to beg us to get up early on Sunday mornings so they could be there serving or ride their bikes a few miles themselves to get to youth. And honestly, that's one of the big reasons we decided to stay!
.
So can you have culture shock moving from Canada to the US or vice versa? Absolutely! What else would you add to this list?
